Standby Generation A solution to enhance your power reliability and lower your energy costs. With Standby Power You'll Never Be Left In The Dark. Generate More Savings For Your Business. Here's how it works. When we install the standby generator at your facility, we will also install a special load management receiver near the generator. Then, before a projected peak of electrical demand, a signal will be sent to your receiver switching your usage to the standby generator. When the peak is over, another signal is sent to shut down the generator and switch your equipment back to normal service. Since a large portion of the cost of electrical power is based on peak demand usage, we can pass those savings onto you in the form of lower rates. This program is one option to help your business enjoy greater reliability in addition to potentially lower energy costs. For more information about our standby generators, contact the Member Service Department at Heartland Power Cooperative at 1-800-349-2832. |

Indoor Air Quality Proper ventilation and humidity control are increasingly important in today's highly insulated homes and provide increased comfort for your family year-round. Tightly insulated homes may not get enough fresh air inside to maintain good air quality. Air-to-air heat exchangers are the most common type of balanced ventilation system and provide healthy indoor air quality. They consist of two fans and a heat exchanger core enclosed in a box that is usually attached to both supply and exhaust duct work. One fan expels indoor air, while the other draws in outside air. In the winter, the warmth of the inside air is transferred to the incoming air. In the summer, the coolness of the air conditioned exhaust air reduces the temperature of the hot incoming air. Kitchens and bathrooms are areas of humidity concentration, and control of moisture in those areas can have energy savings effects. Kitchen fans should be two-speed and exhausted to the outside. Bathroom fans should also be vented to the outside. |

Power Surges: A Serious Threat to your Home Electronics Minor fluctuations in the electric power supply can become a serious concern for today's sophisticated electronics. From computers and direct broadcast satellite systems to VCRs, microwave ovens and advanced heating systems, many high-tech electronics respond to even the briefest electrical variations and power surges. Surges cannot only destroy expensive electronics, but they can also cause gradual deterioration of the electronics in these items. The electricity supplied by Heartland Power Cooperative is clean, quality power. But power surges can happen. One frequent cause of surges is lightning. Worldwide, lightning strikes every 14 seconds, and when it occurs in our area, it can cause significant damage to your electronic equipment. But there are other, more common causes of power surges that can be damaging. Surges can also occur when a tree, bird or squirrel touches a power line. Poor grounding of the electrical system can contribute to many power quality problems. Proper grounding is essential for safe and reliable operation of today's sensitive electronic equipment. Improper or faulty wiring may be another source of power surges. Many people are surprised to learn that the normal operation of large appliances can cause surges as they cycle on and off. Whatever the cause, power surges can be costly. They can damage virtually any electrical equipment that you may use. Damaging surges may enter your home through phone lines, cable or satellite TV hardware, as well as through the power lines. It's important to protect all possible points of entry, particularly if there is expensive equipment connected. That's why we have developed a valuable new service to solve these problems - it's called the Secure HomeTM Program. Secure Home Program... the solution to protecting your home from power surges The Secure HomeSM Program is an exclusive new service providing comprehensive surge protection for your home. This program does what simple power strips and individual surge suppressors don't. It protects all connected equipment in your home - not just from power surges carried over power lines, but phone lines, cable and satellite dish connections too. Our power quality specialists conducted a rigorous product search and assembled a variety of protection packages that include top-of-the-line equipment typically not available in retail stores. Whether you need surge protection for your entertainment equipment or an Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) for your computer, we have a package to fit your needs. You may also purchase these protection devices individually. Each package contains a whole home surge suppressor that prevents catastrophic surges from entering your home through the electrical service entrance. This device is installed at the electric meter or electric service panel (and must be installed by a co-op representative). A Secure HomeSM Package may be purchased by contacting an energy professional at Heartland Power Cooperative. Peak Periods "Peak Periods" are those times of the season when there is the highest demand for electricity. The high demand period can account for as much as 50 percent of the wholesale cost of electricity. These "peak" periods generally occur in the late afternoon or early evening of the coldest days of the winter season.
